That Looks Cool: Week 13 & 14: Dr. Deemo and Lucio Fulci's Zombie

Totally spaced getting last week's "That Looks Cool" entry posted, so it's a double does this week. Plus, what coming up fr the next 3 weeks.

For this week's entry, I chose Lucio Fulci's horror classic Zombie to go with the 2-Disc Blu Ray release in this month's Previews. Love this movie. Might do the dreaded double-dip and pick up the Blu...

And here's last week's theme, Dr. Deemo, an Un-Men villian from Kenner's Swampthing toyline from the 90s. Loved the Un-Men figures in this line. Swamp Voodoo Doctor Deemo was a favorite.

"Ms. Thing" from the upcoming Marvel comic, "FF", by one of my favorite artists, Mike Allred.

#3 (week 16):
"Black Condor" from the Japanese series "Jetman"

#4 (week 17):

"The Shadow" from, well everything from pulps to movies, but specifically Alex Ross' upcoming "Masks" mini-series that teams up The Shadow with the Green Hornet, Kato, The Spider, and Zorro. Too cool. Can;t wait for this!

"That Looks Cool" Sketch Blog Week 12: "Alien Apu" from the Simpsons

Week 12 of the "That Looks Cool" Sketch Blog is upon us and up at bat is: "Alien Apu" from Bongo's The Simpsons Comics.

I've always loved the designs of the Kang and Kodos aliens from the Simpsons and once I saw the alien version of Kwik-E-Mart czar, Apu, I knew I had to draw him. Super fun!

That Looks Cool Week 11: Eyeball Wrestler

Walrusman! "That Looks Cool" Sketch Blog Week 10

Week 10 is here and it features my favorite vintage Star Wars action figure, Walrusman. The inspiration for this week's choice come from Gentle Giant's upcoming 12" reproduction Walrusman figure, which I have no choice but to buy.

I love, love, love the original Walrusman action figure, in all it's off-model glory. As a kid I never really got that he was the dude that looses his arm to Obi-Wan in the bar fight. I just thought he was this bad-ass alien who would lead my armies of aliens and robots against Luke and the Rebellion. An adversary, second only to Darth Vader in his villainy. So here's to you, Walrusman!

"That Looks Cool" Sketch Blog Week 8: "Purple Superman"

This week's "That Looks Cool" Theme is "Purple Superman" from the new kids DC Comic.

No clue about the character of Purple Superman, but he looks fun. I get a heavy "Parasite" vibe based on the color scheme. Fun stuff. I think I might try to grab a few of these for my nephew.

That Looks Cool, the Sketch Blog Week 5: Zulu Kaiju Monster

Week 5 is here! (sorry I'm a day or so late posting...)

This weeks theme is based on a Japanese vinyl figure that I thought looked cool. He was listed as "Zulu Stage 2" from the "Monster Heaven" vinyl figure line, but I have no idea what series or film he's from. Still, a kick-ass design that I found to be a lot of fun. Now, monsters attack!

That Looks Cool!: July 2012 theme picks

Well, the new previews catalog has come and here's the next 4 weekly character/theme picks of things that I thought looked cool:

Week 5 (July 10): MONSTER HEAVEN ZULU vinyl figure

Week 6 (July 17): Marceline from Adventure Time

Week 7 (July 24): Envirob figure

Week 8 (July 31): The Purple Superman

Here's what July looks like for sketch themes. As always, if you'd like to share your rendition on that week's character, email me at matt@grindhousecomics.net.

There's no deadline for submissions. If you send something in advance, I'll hold it untill that week's theme comes up. If you send in a past character, I'll update that weeks post with your entry.

Any style is great (and recommended). The character choices are just a springboard to you creating something cool. Your "Purple Superman" doesn't have to be a cute version like the one pictured. It can be realistic, anime-style, comic style, etc...; whatever interpretation springs forth from you!

That Looks Cool: Week 3 "Flying Dutchman" from Spongebob Squarpants

Week 3 of the "That Looks Cool" sketch blog is upon us. This weeks character/theme "The Flying Dutchman" from Spongebob Squarepants.

I am not familiar with the character ( I might have seen Spongebob twice in my life) but I really dig this wild looking vinyl figure that was in Previews.

Not knowing the character was kind of liberating. I just used the toy image as a launch point and had some fun making made my version of the Dutchman.

That Looks Cool: Week 2 "Cybermen" from Doctor Who

"That Looks Cool" Week 2 is upon us. The inspiration for this week's sketch blog theme is this killer Doctor Who "Cybermen" bust. I don't know much about Dr. Who, but I know bad-ass lookin' robots when I see 'em.

So, I'm adding a sketch blog to Geektarded...

 

A new feature is being added today: The "That Looks Cool" Sketch Blog.

I've been wanting to do this for a while now. I've found that I need to have some "fun time" while drawing, not just the normal grind. I wanted to do something to warm up and stretch the artist muscles a bit. Draw some things I don't normally draw. Mostly have some fun.

So here's the idea:
Each month I'm going to pick four things that I find visually striking/interesting/etc. from the Diamond Comics Preview catalog and do a drawing of the subject/character. Anything from comics to toys to dvds to games can pop up. It'll probably seem pretty random, but that's half the fun.

At the start of each month, I'll post the 4 characters/themes and images of each to give folks plenty of time to see whats ahead.


As part of the fun, I'd love to have others participate. So, if you'd like to join in, email you art to me at matt@grindhousecomics.net and I'll post your piece with that weeks theme. Please try and keep files under 2MB. Other than that have fun. There's also no cut off for sending art. I can add new images to the previous weekly posts. If you send an advance piece, I'll hold posting until that weeks them comes up in the rotation.


Without further ado, here's the themes for weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4.

 

Week 1- "Tiny" from Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Week 2- "Cybermen" from Doctor Who
Week 3- "Flying Dutchman" from Spongebob Square Pants
Week 4- "Lunatic" from an anime called "Tiger & Bunny"

A nice mix of characters. I hope this inspires you artists as much as it does me and hope to see some killer artwork soon.
